Relationships on the Road | Navigating Nomadic Travel as a Couple and Solo Traveler
So, after my post on fb, I have found this out from hosts & guests. Hosts have 14 days to make a claim against a guest. They have to provide receipts & lots of paperwork (I also saw this on another forum for hosts). I also heard from guests, who had been cancelled that airbnb gave them future credits. Ok it probably didn't cover the extra price needed to be paid but it was a healthy amount (you should always ask airbnb) Finally, if a host cancels it is a % of rental fee and can be up to $1000. I suppose we have to try all booking platforms, none are perfect, not even housesitters. I read that people have been complaining about internal cameras ! Always state you do not agree to them.
You’re spot on for every point. The US just continues to get shittier every year in every way. I would add chemtrails, additives and unnecessary ingredients in the food, and lack of social life (meaning it takes real effort to be around people). Off to Japan in 3 days!
We are always excited to go back home and be around all of our people.
Wondering if anyone has any experience with working as a contract proofreader while traveling?
Love your wry sense of humor Brian! Big words are overrated! 😅
A pretty good description of Thailand. I lived in Bangkok for 6 years and I now live in the countryside. I actually like the rainy season the most. The weather might not be suitable for the southern beaches and islands but for the rest of the country it is extremely beautiful because it is so green. The rains can be torrential downpours but they only last a short time. I love June/July/August. Right now you can arrive without a visa and you will be stamped in for 30 days which can easily be extended another 30 days. I think there is a 60 tourist visa that can be extended to get you 90 days. Retirees typically get the 90 day O visa. At the end of 90 days you can extend it for a year at a time. You have to be over 50 years old and there is an 800,000 baht deposit requirement. Other options are the Elite Visa (no age requirement) and the 10 year LTR visa but these both have high financial requirements.
Both if you are the best on UA-cam talking about traveling. I am looking to relocate out of France.
I love your channel and really appreciate your hard work creating these videos! I am also an Airbnb host and I have put blood sweat and tears into my home since I converted it from a long-term to a short term rental. I think some of these bad apples give the rest of us a bad name and that’s unfortunate. I love opening my home to guests and I’m very responsive and service oriented. Maybe, overtime, we may see another option besides Airbnb. Personally, I’m collecting emails from every guest and I’m working on driving traffic to my website and more direct bookings.
Brian, you are a romantic. Romance is the noun.
My husband likes to work from Europe. You have all morning free and you start 3 pm .
Can the host get kicked out for making erroneous claims?
60 days ! 😮 that is crazy
Just FYI the intro to your videos is very skippy and blurry up until it gets to you both starting the video. Wish I could do a screen shot. Thank you for all the wonderful content, always learn something new😊
We know what you are talking about. We had some technical difficulties and by the time we noticed it was too late. Thank you for the heads up.
I'm originally from your home state, much further south than your hometown, which is beautiful, but I'd love to see a video from there or even Seattle and surrounding areas while you're home!
You guys have SF Bay Area accents. Thank you for this very helpful info!
Is there anything at all you find positive about the US ?
Did you watch the video?
We rented an Air B&B in Kitsalino Vancouver B.C. We arrived and the door code did not open, called owner twice no response, called Air B&B they asked us to give them one hour to contact the host and sent us to get a coffee or drink on them while they tried. One hour passed and they could not find the host, they refunded our money and were very sorry. First and last time for us, no thanks!
Please put chapter markers in your videos. Its automatic with UA-cam Tools.
Can you do an updated video on camera/mic equipment, editing software, etc. Basically how you do videos? Your quality has gotten so much better within the last six months.
Never used a home rental place, was looking in our area for a quick getaway that could be more cabin-like, cozier. Not sure now that I would plunk down money on any site even for a short stay. To be fair there seems to be stellar hosts, most seem to rent out several properties and are an official property company. Others rent out their extra home or apartment typically not in a vacation destination area which must be for a different type of customer. Have seen rentals that say upfront they have cameras on the property, typically facing the street or garage... Think we will stick with hotels. Cannot beat the free breakfast, pool, hot tub, laundry, housekeeping. it's not worth the aggravation & many other incidentals. to rent out someone's home.
Just note Romania and Bulgaria are now in Schengen
Where did this horror story take place please?
Chania, Greece
I have been watching quite a few videos on visiting Vietnam. I have yet to hear anyone mention tipping. As you know, here in the US, everyone expects a tip these days. I haven’t heard any comments about it in Vietnam. There are lots of breakdowns of food and drinks costs, but tipping isn’t mentioned.
We went to one sit down restaurant while in Vietnam and the server pointing to the bottom of the menu that stated a 10% gratuity will be added to the bill. He asked us if that was, ok? 😊
Regarding being a tour guide, most places require tour guides to be licensed. Be very careful with this one.
Regarding being a tour guide, most places require tour guides to be licensed. Be very careful with this one.
Doing the Schengen Shuffle 😂❤😂 On the carry-on only, it's not just the cost and time saving. It's the I don't want to deal with awkward heavy stuff on cobblestone or uneven pavement. Soft sided backpack suitcase is my jam. If I can't carry it comfortably on my back then it's just not good for me. PS- Tokyo is straight up cheaper to eat out for most things
VRBO is awful! Double booked frequently, when host tried to correct so we didn't arrive to an occupied STR, she got charged even though it was totally VRBO's fault. Horrible customer service! Host was very communicative and helpful.
I was a traveling contractor with an energy firm in Venezuela, Scotland and in several USA states and all crew were paid a healthy per diem. . Always stayed in m/hotels. If there was an issue, hey! Change room! (Always tip Housekeeping: it works!). Usually negotiated lower rates when residing over several months. However, when I traveled on my own, silly me! I decided to try AirB&B! And to be fair, it was only a half dozen or so stays in southern USA. There. Was. Always. A. Problem. The promised lightning speed of WiFi? Ah, no. Lumpy furniture, minimal lighting, poly sheets, entry door lock key difficult to enter and in some cases, just plain trailer park cheap for not cheap price tag. And "Do's" and "Do not's" list as long as your arm. I smoke outside, no pet, no overnighters, do not drink, no drugs, no parties, always clean up after myself, plump the sofa cushions, sweep, take out trash ...and I still felt guilty for actually being there! Friends do not let friends AirB&B!!!
So helpful!!
I never understood the excitement about AirBnB. Inconsistency is part of the business model. The whole thing never made much sense to me from a business standpoint. Once you have professional cleaners coming in this has to be way more expensive than any hotel which has the whole cleaning process for standardized rooms down to a couple of minutes.
The problem is that Airbnb didn't start out the way it is now. It's become big business.
I am a slow traveler, also currently in Herceg Novi, Montenegro. I do have the benefit of retirement income as a federal employee, still too young to collect SS. But I have stated instagram and will be podcasting on slow travel as a single man for additional income. I love it so might as well see if I can monetize it.
You should absolutely try to monetize it! You have nothing to lose!!
We live in a small Colorado mountain town for 4 months in the summer and RV camp host for a free place to stay. We do have a longtime business that we can do from anywhere (we work 10-20 hrs a week). But my GF has mixed in waiting tables for the summer and does quite well. I am pretty confident that if our business goes away we can both do that for 4 months and make enough to travel and live the other 8 months. I am not too proud to do that.
It sounds like a great pay off to me! Work hard and sacrifice for 4 months and take the rest of the year off!!
No repercussions for hosts who cancel bookings? Lol do your research.. also the service fee is taken from both ends, hosts are no better off nowadays
If the repercussions are something hosts are concerned about then why do cancelations continue to happen? And if hosts are no better off than guests then why are we all using their platform? 🤔
@@BrianandCarrie if a host has >1% cancellation rate, they lose their super host status, which causes their ranking to fall. Just like eBay, Airbnb is solely focused on the customer. As long as you bring a customer, there will always be someone willing to sell to them, no matter how bad they make it for sellers. If they make sellers happy, the customers will go elsewhere.. the basic psychology of how these platforms are run..
Yes. Great idea 😊
Lucky on my end the ratio of property management to income works out very much in my favor. Thank goodness. I did teach business English to adults in person in Spain, it was fun and financially I did well. I can't get behind the being a local tour guide proposal though. It just stinks of taking advantage over ACTUAL locals.
You would be a tour guide for a company that needs English speaking guides.
Carrie, you will be great at a traveler planner! 😊
A good friend of mine did TrustedHouseSitters for months at a time in Costa Rica and did customer service for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines helping people with booking excursions for their cruises. All they needed was an IP phone.
After disappointing stays at airBnB's with no knives, ruined pans, no utensils, I started packing my own non-stick pan, spatula, sharp chopping knife, wine opener, on and on which added a lot of weight but since I was staying a month or more at a time it was worth it. I also bought on Amazon (country sites) the same if I was flying to a new country abandoning my heavy stuff. I escalated my large issues through messaging and got a 300 euro refund out of 1500/month and the owners were angry though I had documented the big issues and problems. I rarely use AirBnB anymore because the owners do not use common sense to review their own properties and many are so disorganized. AirBNB needs to provide training and support.
Totally agree on prop management while away. I'm still in the US and my rentals are in Mexico. Soon I'll be moving there and self managing but then I'll start the slow roll out on the properties selling one every three years. So many times I've gotten a message, "hey the internet is down, or can we take these towels to the beach, the neighbor is being noisy.."
When are you planning to relocate to Merida, Amy?
@@BrianandCarrie January 2026. That remains flexible as my parents needs might require me to stay longer.
Thanks! Always great vids from u two. 🎉
Seems like many of the nomads on UA-cam are pursing pet care as a job.
Brian turn up your voice i’ve watch many many hours of your videos. Listen to them on the freeway everywhere. Carrie has a wonderful voice and it’s so loud. I can’t turn her down a little bit because otherwise I can’t hear Brian Brian if you could turn your voice up a bit it would be awesome speakers, I don’t know how you do it have one further away from you than the other person your happy travels!
😊👍Listening to your presentation intently - what would work for me? Then I pause and think, what am I thinking? I'm 80, retired and still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up? 🥸
🤣
surprised to see Da Nang vietnam wasnt on your list
Da Nang has a lot going for it, but Healthcare is not what we would be looking for. As far as budget friendly for a month or so it is great.
As a host on airbnb for 4 years now, there are consequences in cancelling on guests. our listings can be shadow banned by the platform.
Yet, it is still happening.
Hahahahahaa “Safety”. Subjective but okay. I’ve gained weight so much weight while living abroad. When in the states I was eating lots of fried souther foods and playing sports. Then I got abroad and gain weight. Their food is made for long term survival while America food is for here and now eating. In my thought.
I have an accounting degree, had a career in financial software consulting and running a small biz, and in retirement I have a handful of clients I do bookkeeping and business advisory services for. It keeps my mind active. Now I am considering a YT channel on budget solo travel and early retirement. I am still playing with the idea. Grounded Life Finances kind of led me into it. But I do know there is a lot of work in the channel thing. I actually have clients that are content creators.
Finance channels do very well on UA-cam. If you have the knowledge already, flip the camera one a get started!! We decided that we had nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Great ideas!
Not sure a number was shared, did you have a million, 2 mil, 3 mil before you decided to travel full time?
We never shared a number!! 🤣 Boston Rob 🤣
We just rented a 4 day stay in Calgary. We were astounded to find in the instructions, that we have to strip the linens and wash them and put garbage out. So, we did and still got a large cleaning bill and photos that showed a drop of coffee on the counter also pictures of scrapped paint were included ( about 20 pictures of things we supposedly did wrong). We were both flabbergasted. I contacted VRBO and off course I did not take pictures. The owner of the apartment lives out of town and the cleaning lady took the pictures. She will now make more money. PS.: Noone mentioned my expensive rain gear that I forgot in the closet, where the owner also stored the broken only chairs in the house. Someone could have contacted me and ask , if I would like those back. But here I am expecting probably way too much. I will not rent Vrbo anymore. Also reviews are not posted for more than a reason in the past.
That is infuriating! I would be one the phone with my CC company and VRBO everyday!!
Thanks for the video. Not exactly sure what it is but you guys are looking great. Maybe it's the light or it was the Air BnB issue had you guys stressed, but you seem back to normal. Stay motivated!
Well thank you!! 😁
